Hazelnut Production: Potential for Lake Taupo Catchment

The Waikato Regional Council has introduced controls (Regional Plan Variation 5) on nitrogen leaching from land in the Lake Taupo catchment in an attempt to reduce the manageable amount of nitrogen entering into Lake Taupo by 20%.  To potentially increase returns, Taupo landowners need to consider alternative land uses that yield low levels of leached nitrogen into the lake while retuning profits comparable to or greater than traditional farming systems.

The Lake Taupo Protection Trust has funded this project in order that parties within the Lake Taupo catchment can consider alternative land use measures.  This information is made available to parties on a no prejudice basis.
